Things I have done today...

...instead of reading The Deerslayer [1]:

1. Took Bryant to the airport at 6:00 a.m. so that he could see Boston in the fall--and then picked him back up when he called and took him to the correct terminal so that he could catch his flight. Got slightly lost on the way home. Took a nap once there.

2. Rode three miles to school, on bruises from Monday's two-hour tour of the city.

3. Taught my first section of Intro to Film: met and (at least temporarily) memorized the names of my 22 students, had them fill out the professor's getting-acquainted worksheet, let them go, and read their responses. After having to design, prepare handouts for, and create PowerPoint lectures for my own lectures last year, this seems embarrassingly easy so far. Of course, with my two sections, I'll have roughly three times as many papers to grade... still, I'm not exactly required to be an expert on the material beforehand.

4. Realized I had lost my keys somewhere between locking up my bike and making it to class. Futiley retraced my steps. Freaked out.

5. Went to the Intro to Film lecture. Successfully operated a 16mm film projector for the first time ever (turned it on and off; it was already loaded). Made a list of missing keys.

6. Returned to the building where I'd lost the keys. Was able to locate them in one of the offices, where someone had turned them in after finding them in the restroom (where I'd left them).

7. Rode to Student Health Services, where I filled out paperwork for student health insurance and picked up a helmet for $12, which I was told would retail for around $25, but which I just discovered probably cost much less. Hmmmm.

8. Rode home, stopping on the way to pick up a seat less likely to bruise me.

9. Ate (for the first time of the day), e-mailed, chatted with my landlord when he stopped by.

10. Installed new seat, pausing to chat with my neighbor (which involved touring and admiring the paint jobs in each other's apartments) and with Bryant when he called.

11. Decided it was the right time to clean, degrease and re-lube my bike. Thoroughly.

12. Blogged.

[1] James Fenimore Cooper, first published 1841, Signet Classic edition, 544 pages of very small print. I purchased this yesterday after class and need to have it finished and analyzed by Tuesday morning.

Samuel Clemens wasn't very big on Cooper at all. Just paraphrase his critique and you'll be fine.

I was not happy to hear about your ONE meal late in the day. Don't let all my hard work this summer keeping you fed go to waste.

Daniel: "Cooper's art has some defects. In one place in 'Deerslayer,' and in the restricted space of two-thirds of a page, Cooper has scored 114 offences against literary art out of a possible 115. It breaks the record." Brilliant! Thanks for the tip--I'll read the whole essay when I finish the book.

Angela, thank you for the encouragement! It was quite the day avoiding what I should have been doing, though...

And Mom, I ate some soup after I blogged. And ice cream!
