Day five

Breakfast: Puffins with soy milk; apricots
Lunch: Skillet fiesta tacos in a brown rice tortilla, with salsa; raspberry soy yogurt; almonds
Dinner: Brown rice pasta salad; cantaloupe

I had heard dire things about soy yogurt, Silk brand in particular. However, when my mom and I saw soy yogurt at Trader Joe's yesterday (the store brand; they didn't even carry Silk brand), we decided to give it a try.

I don't know for whom soy yogurt was created; I can only assume it was designed as a vegan alternative to the real thing. However, I think the only person who could genuinely appreciate it would be someone who had never tasted the real thing. (This is probably the same reason why I think Yves' tofu dogs are pretty good.) It's hard to imagine anyone who has enjoyed real yogurt getting much out of the soy alternative; I think you'd have to miss the former an awful lot to appreciate the latter. I, for one, do not.

Tonight I'm poodle-sitting for a friend of my parents'. In addition to the poodles, she has a pool; I'm looking forward to both.

I don't think I could eat that much rice. I love rice and curry (just had platefuls of it at Bangkok this evening) but I'm not a big rice fan in general.

I think soy yogurt was invented for those people who hate to drink regular milk. These are the same people who hate puppies and vote Republican.

Just kidding.

But really...why soy yogurt?

Well, I've eaten plenty of soy yogurt in my day. It's got the same beneficial bacteria that dairy yogurt does. That said, it sure doesn't taste like the real thing.

Ceri, soy yogurt tastes best as the base for fruit smoothies. Just throw a bunch of fruit, soy yogurt, ice, and ground flax seeds into the blender and the weird beany taste will kind of blend into the background. I'd use the vanilla or plain versions for this.

Heather, it is a lot of rice! I still love it, though (at least for now); I think it makes me feel better than wheat.

Nothing, I don't drink cow milk, but I do miss real yogurt!

And Leah, that smoothie idea is gold. I will definitely give it a shot.
