First week

The reason I took myself to a movie Saturday night was to celebrate the completion of the first week of classes. That morning I had orientation with my online survey class, in which I yammered, more or less non-stop, for an hour and a half straight. However, I think this was probably preferable to my experience with the History of Women Artists class in Sandusky, in which (and understand that when I started class, I had been in Ohio for just twelve hours, had slept for about five of them, and had been dodging semis in a torrential downpour during my 57-mile commute to campus) I gave out the syllabus, talked for about 30 minutes, and dismissed them. It's a two-and-a-half hour class.

I think that my survey students and my Women Artists students probably have the impression of me, respectively, as "evil and boring" and "nice but spacey." For the first day of class, I think I'd prefer the former.

...And today, on Disaster Kitchen hints...
Dear readers, when you are poor, hungry, and have already been waiting a good half hour for your rice to cook, only to smell the tell-tale odor of smoke despite your careful measuring and timing, don't panic! The good rice maybe be scraped off the top, the crispy and blackened bottom rice thrown out, and the good returned to the (lightly washed) pot, with some water, to finish cooking. Eat it with curry, and you won't even notice the singed flavor!

The new little picture in the corner of your blog (it probably has a technical name) is really cute!

Thanks! Bryant took that in Joshua tree.

i've seen recipes that actually call for taking the rice out and putting it back in, so think of it as a legitimate method! by the way, your situation with your neighbor taking your bike spot reminded me of our defacto concierge in our apt. complex--she actually puts traffic cones in her space sometimes when she leaves (one of the cones is apparently filched from the city of austin, the other one most likely from daniel's work truck). maybe you could pinch a traffic cone from somewhere?

That is a great idea, Strovska. Ceri has problems with people double parking behind her as well. I think she should park with a lot of space in front of her so if people park behind her they will be in the alley. That way she can at least get some good speed to knock them out of the way.

The problem with my neighbor's bike is that now that it's in my spot, he's not moving it (who would -ride- in winter??). The problem with my neighbors' cars is that they don't believe I move mine (I'm on my bike!). But traffic cones... that is genius.
