Passed

I passed my oral exams!

Yes, it was harrowing.
Yes, I felt rather stupid, and repetitive, and inarticulate.
Yes, I think I blushed with embarrassment because of all of the above (my ears felt tingly, anyway).

And, yes, my committee made incredibly incisive and insightful and intelligent comments on my prospectus, and now I have to reformulate the whole project, and rewrite the whole thing.

But I passed! And when I came tearing into the TA office afterward, and whooped, "I passed!" my kind friends actually clapped and cheered for me. And then they accompanied me to Acadia, where we celebrated.

Soon, of course, the really hard part... but for now, the sheer relief!

What do you mean the hard part is yet to come? What more are they making you do???

Good work, Ceri. And you're right...the really hard part is coming up. Just stick to it (unlike me) and you'll be fine.

Thanks, all!

The next step is the dissertation, which is hard for all sorts of reasons, including that it's the length of a full book; that it must constitute completely original research; and that you no longer have the external direction, guidance, and deadlines of traditional coursework.

So in some ways, a lot of the hard work is done, but quite a lot still remains.

That is awesome! Ted says to tell you "that is awesome" as well. Congrats. We'll have to celebrate next week. I'll be there in person to take you out to celebrate. That is a hottie new picture, by the way.

Thanks, Heather! 'Definitely looking forward to celebrating in person!

YAY! And even though bio sciences are quite different from humanities graduate programs, I think all committees are the same. I have friends who, after they passed their orals, said that they were still depressed all weekend because they felt so stupid. The committee just asks and asks and asks until they stump you. But you PASSED! Congratulations!
