Timeless

"Even people whose lives have been made various by learning, sometimes find it hard to keep a fast hold on their habitual view of life, on their faith in the Invisible--nay, on the sense that their past joys and sorrows are a real experience, when they are suddenly transported to a new land, where the beings around them know nothing of their history, and share none of their ideas--where their mother earth shows another lap, and human life has other forms than those on which their souls have been nourished. Minds that have been unhinged from their old faith and love, have perhaps sought this Lethean influence of exile, in which the past becomes dreamy because its symbols have all vanished, and the present too is dreamy because it is linked with no memories." --George Elliot, Silas Marner (1861), Chapter 2

my dad read us silas marner when i was about 10 or 12, because he liked it so much. unfortunately i can hardly remember anything about it now, except an episode involving a quarry, which may or may not actually be in there.

I tried to read Silas Marner when I was about 13 or 14. I didn't get very far. But I did manage to read Anna Karenina. Odd.

I like Anna Karenina, I've read it a couple of times.

I'm cruising through Silas, but I've never read Anna Karenina, so I'm impressed by both of you. It's on my list.
