'Better start from start...

Tonight was exciting because a friend had people over to her place, and I could enjoy it because for the first time in two and a half months, I don't have to teach tomorrow!

I sometimes have a hard time convincing myself to go to social gatherings, especially if I have plenty of time to contemplate the upcoming event and will be traveling and arriving solo. I almost always dread even parties I've actually looked forward to, but also almost always win the battle and end up going and having a good time, as was the case tonight.

This was the first time I'd seen this friend's apartment, and it--like her--is absolutely gorgeous and impeccably appointed. She has a sage living room, cayenne dining room, slate office, and terra cotta bedroom, with real furniture in each. She has the same hardwood floors and dark wood trim that I have in my apartment, but her apartment (as another of our friends pointed out) actually "looks like a grown-up's. "

I was smitten, and inspired. I've been here nearly a year and still have at least one box I haven't unpacked--not to mention the piles and piles of papers that have accumulated on all the horizontal surfaces, awaiting sorting, filing, tossing, or otherwise dealing with. The task is daunting, but I am fortified with visions of a dwelling that looks less "like I'm a college kid in a messy dorm room" and more like one where I'd actually want to spend time. Perhaps more immediately: guests arrive on Sunday!

(The other exciting thing was returning to my car and seeing a bumper sticker on the car behind me that said "My other car is a Pynchon novel." (Google found me that link, of course; the phrase caught my eye because of my fondness for Pynchon, but I had no idea what it meant.))

I don't even have the school excuse for the piles of papers on the floor and table. Our house is a constant work in progress, but we don't seem to get around to accomplishing the projects. We get a lot of game-playing done, though.

I have the just-moved-in excuse, though that one will be expiring shortly, I fear.

You mentioned the dining room, but what color is the kitchen, is it adjoined and painted in the same color?

I skipped the kitchen, even though it's a separate room, because it was pretty nondescript. The thing I do remember is apple-red metal cupboards.

Ooooo, that reminds me of the red metal-type cabinets I saw on IKEA's web site. I really liked them but their just so bold. And I can't afford new cabinets anyway so I decided not to worry about them looking too bold in my kitchen. Actually, wait, my Kitchen's pretty bold to begin with, the red cabinets might tone it down.
