Speaking of banjaxed earlobes, have you heard of this fellow Barthelme? Mom gave me a collection including this story: http://www.jessamyn.com/barth/daumier.html.

What a beautiful photo! What is this? Your window?

Dad, I hadn't heard of him, but did start that story--hopefully sometime I'll be able to finish it!

Leah, yes, it's the ice on the inside of my kitchen window. I have no idea why those patterns formed, but I thought they were really amazing.

So, somewhat impulsively, and against your warning, I saw The Last King of Scotland. Was it the last two images that ruined the film for you? What do you think of it without them?

Well... here's what I wrote about it. I did cover my eyes for most of the worst stuff, and, yes, the goriness did color my opinion. I maintain, however, that as well-acted and pretty as much of the film may have been, it lacked any real statement or meaning. I guess I just expected more, given the overt subject matter--which ended up clearly subordinant to the film's "sexier" subplots.

I'm probably just a complainer.

What happened to your heating machine?

I agree with you about the lack of impact. It was fairly hollow storywise. The colors and lighting were almost done too well, they commanded you to notice them.

Again, like Jarhead, we're given a film taken from a book, which provides a dilemma as for where to place the blame for short comings in the script. In comparing it to Hotel Rwanda, it falls terribly short.

But I also think, for good or bad, the script is driven by the characters. Nicolas Garrigan isn't a world beater, he tried to escape a respectable life of helping people, and that evasiveness in his character was his flaw. Unfortunately, we see the story from his quite limited perspective.

I checked out Nosferatu this last Halloween, and there really is plenty to draw comparisons on.

Oh, the heating machine works beautifully, but the windows are right up against the outside, so they stay chilly a little longer...

Oh right. Your windows are right up by the outside...mine, are on the inside.
